Black Walnut
Pamper your wood
Your Bugsy Doodles black walnut board is not just a kitchen accessory; it's a piece of culinary art. To ensure it remains as stunning and functional as the day you bought it, follow this guide to care for and maintain your board.
Daily Care
Your Bugsy Doodles black walnut board is finished with Tung oil. This combines elegance with durability.
Cleaning
After use, clean the board with a soft cloth and mild soap. Rinse briefly with water and immediately dry with a towel. Unlike other finishes, Tung oil provides a water-resistant surface, but it’s still best to minimize prolonged contact with water.
Drying
Ensure the board is thoroughly dry before storing. Store it in a dry area to prevent moisture absorption.
Routine Maintenance
Stains
For light stains, a paste made of baking soda and water can be gently rubbed on the stained area. Rinse off and dry immediately.
Odors
To neutralize odors, wipe the board with a cloth dampened in a mild vinegar solution, then rinse and dry.
Surface Scratches
Light scratches can be minimized by gently sanding the area with fine-grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain, then reapplying Tung oil.
Deep Scratches
For more significant scratches, it's advisable to reapply Tung oil over the entire surface after sanding to ensure an even finish.
Additional Tips
Avoid High Heat
Tung oil is renowned for its durability when applied to wood. It actually penetrates deep into the wood and strengthens as it cures. While the surface of your board will be cured upon arrival, the process will still be occurring deep inside of your board. Since we cut our boards thick, this can take 6 months or more to be “fully cured” throughout. High heat will draw residual uncured oil from deep within your board. If this occurs, simply wipe off and allow to cool.
Storage
Store the board in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight. To prevent warping. If vertical storage is necessary, ensure the board is securely positioned.
Presenting of Knife Skills
Use your board primarily for serving and presentation to preserve its finish. Avoid cutting or chopping harshly on the board to maintain the integrity of the Tung oil finish. Check back with us, as end grain chopping blocks are in the works.
